Parenting a child with Asperger's syndrome?

From: Phyllis Wheeler

Dear friends,

I am a writer and mother of four, including a girl now 20 and a boy now 15 with Asperger's Syndrome. It has been nine years now since my daughter was diagnosed with Asperger's.

These were seven years during which I dug out lots of information and set up various parenting structures and strategies in our household.

These strategies are effective! When Shannon was diagnosed with Asperger's, the evaluators told me they were amazed at her poise and self-confidence.

Learn the parenting secrets that brought her to the great self-confidence level she has today!

Re: Improve The Life of A Loved One With Autism

Shocking Information - Did You Know That...

* 1 in every 150 babies born has Autism ( and some reports suggest the numbers are even greater then that)
* Autism is the fastest growing developmental disability. In the U.S. alone, autism increased by 172% during the 1990s

So, as you can see, the number of diagnosed cases of autism is growing fast...

When I first saw this information, like most people, I was shocked how the number of cases were growing year-on-year...

However, even with this increase, if you were to ask most people about autism they'd still think much like I did when I first heard about it...

I'm embarrassed to say that all I knew about autism when I first heard of it was from watching the film "Rainman", where Dustin Hoffman played the role of a man with autism...

But that all changed pretty suddenly!

Like most people, when my life was touched by autism we didn't know where to turn or what to believe...

The 'specialists' who were supposed to help me did little to tell me about all the options available...

And when I asked them about special classes and treatment options - well let's just say they weren't very helpful.

So, I searched high and low for practical advice and methods I could in place, but struggled to find anything useful.

The few resources I did find were either poorly written, written for doctors or medical practitioners, contained out-of-date information or only gave part of the information that I needed.

I'm sure you've found the same... Come across similar frustrations on your journey to understand autism.

So for me, the only option available was to find the answers myself...

I spent many hours, days, weeks and months researching proven techniques to really understand and manage Autism (As a Health Researcher I already had a headstart on most people).
